catcher in the rye- chapter 26

The final chapter. Holden is in a mental hospital. He talks about how he misses everybody from his childhood. Including Stradlater, Maurice, and Ackley. I don't think he misses them because he liked them. I think he misses them because they were in a very important part of his life, his childhood. The story ends with Holden saying this; "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody." When Holden sais this I think he means that anybody that you interact with, at an important time of your life, you remember them forever. It doesn't matter how much you like them.

catcher in the rye- chapter 25

In this chapter Holden goes to a subway station. He reads a magazine article that makes him think that he has cancer. After that, Holden goes down a street and starts getting worried. He is worried because he doesn't think he will get to the other side. He prays to Allie, that Allie will help him make it across. Holden decides to run away, but first, he goes to Phoebe to give her back the money she gave him. When he does this, Phoebe wants to go with him, but Holden refuses to let her. This is the only sign of real maturity that Holden has shown in the entire book, so far. Later, when Holden and Phoebe are at the zoo, she asks him if he is going to stay and Holden tells her yes. He realizes that he will have to face people, who are phonies, his entire life no matter where he goes. However, it won't be too bad if he is around people he loves and cares about.

catcher in the rye- chapter 24

In this chapter Holden goes to Mr. Antolin's apartment. They are talking for a while then suddenly, Mr. Antolini tells Holden that he has recently talked to Holden's father about Holden being such a bad student. He sais "I feel like you are friding for some kind of terrible fall" to Holden. I think this fall represents society and how many people can't handle alot of stress that they have in their lives.

catcher in the rye- chapter 23

In this chapter, Holden and Phoebe are still talking. However, their parents come home and Holden goes to hide in the closet. Phoebe lies to mom to cover for Holden. Holden then decides to leave. Phoebe gives him her christmas money because she wants Holden to be ok. This gesture brings Holden to tears. Phoebe gets scared because she does not like to see people crying. Especially people she looks up to, like Holden. Phoebe offers for Holden to sleep with her, but Holden sais that he has to go because Mr. Antolini is waiting for him.

catcher in the rye- chapter 22

This entire chapter is about Holden talking with Phoebe. Phoebe brings up the point that Holden doesn't like anything. I completely agree with her statement of this. However, Holden gets very deffensive about it and starts yelling at Phoebe. Holden ends the chapter, by going to make a phone call to one of his old teachers, Mr. Antolini. I think Holden is the kind of person that thinks that he can say bad things about everybody else, but if somebody sais something bad about him he will flip out. I find it weird and kind of annoying that Holden talks about how phony people are, but he doesn't realize how much of a phony he is, himself!

catcher in the rye- chapter 21

Holden goes home in this chapter. His parents aren't there, but he talks to Phoebe. He sais "I just felt good for a change." I found this to be very significant because most of the story, Holden has just been complaining about how miserable his life is and about all of the people around him. Phoebe is also very excited. You can tell by the way she jumps to hug Holden after he wakes her up. They talk for a little while and eventually Phoebe finds out that Holden got kicked out of Pencey. She is then very afraid of what their dad will do to Holden. At the end of this chapter, Holden takes some cigarettes out of a box that was his dad's because Holden was out. This shows how much Holden smokes. I think he smokes alot because most of the time he is very lonely, or he just feels lonely.

catcher in the rye- chapter 20

Holden sees a girl named Valencia at a night club. He wants to talk with her, but he never gets the chance to. He calls Sally Hayes, while he is drunk, and she just tells him to go home. The piano player in the club sais the same. Before going home, however, Holden goes to Madison Avenue and down to the lagoon. Holden, once again, mentions "where do the ducks go when the pond freezes?" Holden is obviously deeply interested in the matter.

catcher in the rye- chapter 19

Holden has a few drinks with Carl Luce. Luce starts getting annoyed when Holden keeps asking about his sex life. Luce, then, tells Holden that he needs to see a psychoanalyst because they think Holden's mind is immature. I believe what Carl Luce sais about Holden being immature. This would explain why he can never seal the deal with anything he sais.

catcher in the rye- chapter 18

Holden calls his old friend, Carl Luce, to have a drink. After they set it up, and Holden hangs up the phone, Holden goes to the movies at Radio City. He did not really want to go, but he wanted to kill some time. Holden then talks about the time D.B, his brother, went to war. Holden sais " I am sort of glad they have the atomic bomb invented. If there's ever another war, I'm going to sit right the hell on top of it." Saying this, I think Holden likes to be reckless about his life. However, I think this is like the situation with the prostitute. Holden is all talk and no action.

catcher in the rye- chapter 17

Holden thinks that women are married to men that don't deserve them. Holden sais that actors are "phonies" and that alot of the kids that went to Pencey with him were phonies. He wants to run away with Sally now, rather than waiting until after college, because he doesn't want to go home to his parents. I think he is afraid of his parents' reactions to him getting kicked out of Pencey Prep.

catcher in the rye- chapter 16

Holden knows his way around New York very well. He talks about his upcoming date with Sally Hayes. I think Holden asks Sally on a date because he is desperate for friendship and some form of love. He is very lonely alot of the time.

catcher in the rye- chapter 15

Holden makes a date with Sally Hayes. While he has some time to kill he goes to get breakfast at a place that isn't to far from where they are meeting. Holden meets and talks to two very nice nuns. Throughout the chapter Holden is complaining alot about things that annoy him. I think Holden is one of those people that will see the flaws of everybody, but himself.

catcher in the rye- chapter 14

Holden is thinking about Allie. Sunny and Maurice come to Holden's room demanding he give them 5 more dollars for the prostitue that Holden didn't have sex with. Holden sais that it isn't fair, but after an arguement and Maurice hitting Holden, the two just take the money from him. I think Holden is dumb in this chapter and the one behind it. If he asks for a prostitute and pays for the prostitute, then why not have sex with the prostitute? I think Holden is just too immature to have sex.

catcher in the rye- chapter 13

Holden asks a pimp to send a prostitute to his room. When she arrives and wants to get busy Holden backs down. He lied saying " i am recuperating from an operation in my spinal canal." In his mind he was too depressed to do it. I think this is another example of Holden not being as mature as he sais he is.

catcher in the rye- chapter12

In chapter twelve Holden is depressed in New York. He is depressed, basically, everywhere he goes. He asks the cab driver, Horwitz, about where the ducks go when the pond freezes again. Horwitz doesn't know so he begins talking about the fish. Holden goes to Ernie's and during his time there he runs into he brother's ex-girlfriend, Lillian Simmons. When Lillian asks Holden to come sit with her date and her, but Holden sais he must leave. This can kind of be another example of how Holden talks of himself like he is so mature, but when it comes to sealing the deal he backs down.

catcher in the rye- chapter 11

Holden in sitting in the hotel lobby in this chapter. He is thinking about Jane and the summer the two of them spent together. They were not technically a couple, but they were together all the time and they held hands often. I think Holden has had a cruch on Jane since that summer, but he just won't admit to it.

catcher in the rye- chapter 10

Holden goes to the "Lavender Room," which is kind of like a night club. He meets 3 older ladies, two of whom were very ugly but one blonde was attractive. Holden dances with each of them. Again Holden uses a fake name. They dance and have a fun night, but it is not much more than a few dances and some drinks. (Holden could only get served coke w/no alcohol)

catcher in the rye- chapter 9

Holden goes to the Edmonton Hotel in New York. He takes a cab there and on the way he asks the cab driver about where the ducks go when the pond freezes over. This is something that Holden is obviously very interested in. Holden thinks the hotel is strange. "the hotel was lousy with perverts and morons." Holden also kind of contradicts himself in this chapter. Saying; "i'm probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw." and "Sex is something I just don't understand." Holden uses another alias in this chapter when he is talking to Faith Cavendish. His purpose of calling her, at a very late hour, was that his friend had told him about her and that she was up for a "sexual" time every once in a while. She sais that she can't meet him tonight and offers to see him the next day, but Holden sais that he can only do it this one night. He regrets saying that almost immediately after saying it.

catcher in the rye-chapter 8

Holden walks to the train station. He meets up with Ernest Morrow's mother on the train. He does not reveal his real name and he tells a couple more lies to her. Holden finds Mrs. Morrow to be very sexually appealing, but he does nothing, and sais nothing, to her about it. I think it was ood for Holden to keep his mouth shut about that sort of thing.

catcher in the rye- chapter 7

Holden goes to Ackley's room in the middle of the night. He stays there for a while trying not to think about Jane. When Holden wakes Ackley up, he asks him about joining a monastery.
ackley gets very defensive, immediately, saying "I don't care what you say about me or anything, but if you start making cracks about my goddam religion for Chrissake-" This shows how important catholicism is to Ackley. That night Holden leaves Pencey Prep all together.

catcher in the rye- chapter 6

Stradlater doesn't like the composition Holden wrote for him at all. Stradlater won't tell Holden what Jane and he did on their date. They get into a heated arguement and Stradlater ends up hittting Holden and makes him bleed. I think Stradlater should have been more appreciative of the work that Holden did for him. If he wanted something better, he should not of gone to a kid that is flunking out of the school to write the paper for him.

catcher in the rye- chapter 5

Holden writes a composition for Stradlater. He decides to write it on his brother's baseball mitt. Holden sais "I wasn't to crazy about it, but I couldn't think of anything else descriptive." His brother had written poems all over the glove, in green ink. I think it was a nice thing to write about.

chapter 4-catcher in the rye

Stradlater has a date with a girl he doesn't really know. The girl happens to be an od friend of Holden's. I am sort of anxious to read what Stradlater does with her and if Holden ever goes to see her.

Catcher in the rye- chapter 3

Holden again uses the word phony to describe people. I'm not sure if he really understands the meaning of the word, or if he does know it and he just uses it with a different meaning each time. He sais that he likes to read, he is quite illiterate, and that his brother is his favorite author. He also discusses where he lived and some of the people he encountered when living there. I think Holden should be more open instead of being so sarcastic to everybody.

catcher in the rye chapter 2

In this chapter i feel like Holden doesn't care enough. His low grades do not bother him. He seems to be stressed alot because he sais that he has gray hairs. Holden often has small reflections about random things. Each reflection concluded with a general statement saying that "everybody" is something or does something.

catcher in the rye chapter 1

Holden seems like a "bad boy" character. He doesn't care much for school and he has been kicked out of a few schools already. He is healthy despite his recent smoking habit. In Holden's eyes, Pencey Prep, his school, is full of crooks.
